I came across Ani Difranco in a book I read, "Small Giants", about small companies whose owners decided to keep the companies small rather than expand. She chose a business model aimed at "saving" the city of Buffalo by running her business as basically socialism eschewing all profit and employing her road crew all year. Not how I would run a business but it's her money she can do what she wants.
Musically she's kind of rock-folky, pretty good and definitely worth checking out.
I, too, highly recommend the DiFranco. I discovered her yeeeaaars ago at a "listening station" at a Virgin Megastore, or what have you, when I was in college. It was her album "Dilate" and to date it's the only one I own of hers, but I LOVE it. I think you'd like her, too...

That's who I ended up with, too. I guess I should check out her music - maybe I'll like it!

Ani DeFranco is a genius - you should definitely check her out. If you don't know where to start look for "32 Flavors".
